We can’t mention all the great trucking noir films like “Sorcerer,” “Hell Drivers,” or “Thieves’ Highway” without also mentioning “They Drive By Night,” the 1940 Bogart film based on “The Long Haul,” a 1938 novel by A.I. Bezzerides. Bezzerides also wrote the 1949 novel “Thieves’ Market” and adapted it for the screen that same year as “Thieves’ Highway,” which goes a long way to explain much of the same settings and props (truckers hauling fruit in Southern California) that the two films share.
