Jack Shea, himself an occasional contributor to the Hemmings Blog, has recently been helping Fred Hill of LaGrande, Oregon, digitize his photo collection and identify the cars pictured in it. One of the more interesting photos they’ve run across was this one of Barney Oldfield (note the cigar) piloting Walter Christie’s front-wheel-drive racer. Fred noted that the photo hasn’t seen the light of day since the 1940s, but he had no further information to go with it, such as where the photo was taken and when. We know that Oldfield bought the car from Christie in the late spring of 1912 and sold it in June 1916. According to William F. Nolan’s biography of the racer, he raced it all over in those years: Portland, Oregon; Minneapolis; Cleveland; San Antonio; San Francisco; San Bernardino; Playa Del Ray, California; El Centro, California; Bakersfield, California; Phoenix; Ascot Park in Los Angeles; and Indianapolis. So can anybody identify the track at which this photo was taken?
