I certainly understand the whole date-coded, as-it-came-from-the-factory thing. There’s certainly been plenty of misrepresentation in the muscle car scene over the years to warrant the focus on authenticity. But that presumes everybody out there’s a dishonest creep, and we can see from the ad for this 1970 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that there are still plenty of honest people out there willing to show a car for what it really is. Plus, without the original engine in it, you can flog this ‘bird like it oughta be flogged. From the seller’s description:

4 Speed with 93,806 miles. PHS Documented. Which I believe the miles to be original due to the condition of the under side of the car and the interior. The car does retain its original interior, dash, steering wheel, seats and carpet. Drivers seat has a small split where you enter the car on the bottom cushion approximately four inches, that is the only flaw in the seats. The block was replaced due to reasons unknown to me and previous owner. It now has a 1970 WT coded four speed block with #12 Heads, rebuilt carb not date coded to motor. It does retain its numbers matching four speed trans and 3.55 12 bolt safe-t-track rear end. The motor was rebuilt and is 30 over bore with Ram Air III specs. The motor has approximately 1500 miles on it. The clutch was replaced with a centerforce clutch, pressure plate and fly wheel. The underside of car is all original and has zero rust. The original red oxide primer still looks great. The quarters have zero rust, the trunk has zero rust, the doors have zero rust, the fenders have zero rust but the original drivers side fender has some filler and the bottom half of the fender but shows no rust. The passenger fender was replaced for reasons unknown to me or the previous owner. The car was repainted approximately 23 years ago and needs to be repainted again due to shrinking of paint it has cracks on the top surfaces which is the characteristic of 23 year old lacquer paint. The car has the correct 15″ wheels with 14″ centers. This car runs and drives excellent and is very strong.
