Ever since we ran the story on Ben Smith’s retractable hardtop for the first-generation Mustang back in HCC #13, October 2005, we’ve yet to come across another one until now, when we spotted this 1965 Ford Mustang with a Smith-designed retractable hardtop for sale on Hemmings.com. From the seller’s description:
This 1965 Mustang has a retractable hardtop, one of 18 made. Designed as a kit for custom installation by Ford Design Engineer Ben J. Smith (inventor of the ’57-’59 Ford Retractable and the engineer-in-charge of putting it in production). Present research indicates that 14 still exist. The exterior of the car is Guardsman Blue and the interior is Slate Blue. Options include: Power Steering, AM/FM Cassette Radio, Duel O/S Chrome Mirrors, Vinyl Roof, Tri Spoke Wheel Covers and White Wall Tires. The Engine is a Ford Windsor 289 V-8 with 1-4 Barrel Holley Carburetor. The Transmission is a Ford C-4 Automatic with a Floor Shifter.
