I co-authored this book, my first. That takes care of the full disclosure. The bigger news is that “Miller’s Time,” introduced last weekend, is a truly great, compelling story. That fact is solely due to its subject and my writing partner, Don Miller, whose life story would qualify as a work of fiction if anyone other than him tried to claim it.

Don is one of the Hemmings Nation’s most distinguished citizens, a restorer of concours-quality cars and flathead Ford student of the first rank. He’s also in the first rank among people of great influence at the top of American racing. Don was Roger Penske’s lead lieutenant in motorsports for more than 30 years, a technology and marketing innovator, co-founder of the current Penske NASCAR team, and nurterer of great drivers like Ryan Newman, as seen here.

Don has given his all to the world of cars, very nearly including his life, and endured to become a Bonneville record holder as a driver. The photos of our book signing last weekend during AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway were taken by my wife, Jacquie. The first photo shows us getting Sharpie cramps. The guy in the blue shirt, incidentally, was our guest author, Tom Cotter, who will be guest speaker at the Hemmings New England Concours d’Elegance in July.

Some other special guests showed up. This is Pete Taylor, who for years was chief engine builder at Holman-Moody, the fabled Ford factory racing team based in Charlotte, whose fearsome engines raced all the way from Darlington to Le Mans. I wouldn’t lie to you; Don’s life story is exciting and inspiring. You can order Miller’s Time for $29.95 by calling 877-907-8181, or at www.coastal181.com. Don was recipient of NASCAR’s first Humanitarian of the Year award, and accordingly, all proceeds from the book’s sale are earmarked for the prevention of child abuse.
