It looks like big-time organized drag racing will no longer be a part of the extensive schedule of events put on by the Goodguys Rod and Custom Association.

As Goodguys recently released its 2011 schedule, it became immediately apparent that the three Goodguys events that featured drag racing in partnership with the Nostalgia Pro Comp Association – the Hot Rod Nationals in Indianapolis; the Blue Suede Cruise in Norwalk, Ohio; and the Nostalgia Nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky – had been eliminated, as had two other Goodguys events, the Orange County Get-Together in Costa Mesa, California, and the Great American Nationals in Pocono, Pennsylvania.

Goodguys spokesman John Drummond said that it wasn’t the intention of the organization to eliminate its vintage drag racing series.

“The continuous weather issues, declining car counts and poor attendance were the main reasons for eliminating those events,” Drummond said. “It’s hard not to imagine doing a vintage drag race in 2011. We have been doing at least one major race since 1989 but the reality is we could no longer continue on with events that did not live up to expectations.”

Drummond said that Goodguys has in no way severed ties with the NPCA.

Goodguys began its association with the NPCA three years ago, following the 2006 loss of its March Meet at Famoso Raceway, the signature event of the Goodguys Vintage Drag Race Association series. In addition, only two Goodguys events this year – the PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio; and the Pacific Northwest Nationals in Puyallup, Washington – are slated to feature Friday night drags, down from five events that featured the Friday night drags last year. However, more Goodguys events this year will feature autocrossing: 15 events, up from 13 last year.

Three new Goodguys events will appear in 2011: the Spring Lone Star Nationals in March in Fort Worth, Texas; the Fall Del Mar Nationals in November in Del Mar, California; and the Wix Filters Speedway Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition, the spring Del Mar Nationals, the Chicagoland Nationals and the Great Northwest Nationals have all moved to different weekends from last year.
