To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the hugely successful Unimog, Mercedes-Benz has not only shown a concept truck that’s garnered plenty of headlines, but they’ve also released a small batch of Unimog photos from the company’s archives. Recall that Unimog is a contraction of the truck’s full name, Universal Motor Gerät, and the photos do an excellent job of portraying the ‘Mog in a variety of configurations, from fire trucks and hay rakes to the locomotive seen above.

U404 Austrian Fire Service with tarpaulin: Product range 404 was produced from 1955-1980 and is still the most frequently built Unimog with almost 65,000 units manufactured. Its outstanding off-road mobility made it especially popular with fire services all over the world.

U416: As an alternative to product range 404 with its petrol engine, from 1965 on product range 416 widened the Unimog offer with a diesel engine. It remained in production until 1989 and was mainly used as a highly mobile off-road transport vehicle.
U406 for road-rail operations: Product range 406 was manufactured from 1963-1989. This product range with its much more powerful engines opened up whole new vistas of Unimog operations, such as being used as a very versatile road-rail vehicle.
U402 tractor unit: After Mercedes-Benz took over the manufacturing of the Unimog, new models were quickly developed. From 1953 on, product ranges 401/402 replaced the first Mercedes-Benz product range 2010. They were manufactured until 1956 and offered for the first time a 400 mm longer wheelbase as an option.
U401 B-FH German Railways: From 1953 on, product ranges 401/402 also provided a closed cab. Depending on its use, the customer could then choose between an open and a closed cab.
U411 Züblin with trailer: The typical appearance of the original Unimog was also retained by product range 411 manufactured from 1956-1974. It was used worldwide as a very powerful and manoeuvrable tractor vehicle and workhorse.
U421 with front loader: Product range 421 was manufactured from 1966-1989. A wide variety of attached implements allowed it to be used economically for different kinds of work.
