One of the motorcycles that actually met reserve at the June 12 Mid America Auction at the Rhinebeck Fairgrounds was Lot No. 27, this meticulously restored 1927 Ariel Model B with sidecar. The 557cc side-valve single-cylinder engine had been rebuilt as part of the rehabilitation. Ariel produced several different models in 1927, designated A-E, with only the A and B models using the large-displacement engine. Models C-E used a 500cc displacement. Model B motorcycles were only offered until 1930 with the 557 engine discontinued in 1935. Designed by Val Page, the model B featured a lowered seat, shorter wheelbase and saddle-type tank, making the B a sales success as a touring bike. 1927 Ariel sales increased ten-fold over their 1925 model line because of its introduction.
Total sales from the June 12th Rhinebeck Auction were over $283,000.
