* Earlier this week, marmer submitted for the Automotive Alphabet a couple Guy Big J pictures, which reminded me that I’d yet to re-post BigLorryBlog’s mention from a couple weeks ago as to how the Big J got its name. Jaguar enthusiasts will be quick to note that it came about after the kitty-cat brand’s purchase in 1961 of Guy Motors -since 1920 primarily a bus and truck (okay, lorry) builder.
* What do you do when you can’t get your radio show listeners to stop bickering over which is the better brand – Holden or Ford? (Helps if you live in New Zealand to have that problem in the first place.) Apparently, you combine a Mustang with an HQ, power it by a Ford 302, then sell it to benefit a mental health charity.
* Hot rodding guys will be familiar with Harry Bentley Bradley, the illustrator and Art Center instructor and recent subject of a two-part profile on Dean’s Garage.
* Big Blue’s recently posted images of this old GMC school bus with two Volkswagen Microbuses welded to the top. I think it’d be rather cool to ride in one of the upper buses on a long road trip.
* When we examined the life and times of Max Gerlach a couple months ago, we ran across the case of Edward H. Underhill, accused of shorting customers on gasoline at his Garage de Luxe in August 1910. Thanks to an article on gas station scams in the February 1929 issue of Modern Mechanics, reprinted at Modern Mechanix, we see how that was likely done.
