Hobbies are big business. We on the buying end see collecting, building, etc., as hobbies – but for the companies that make what we collect, our acceptance of their wares is usually the difference between red ink and black.
So imagine our surprise to be introduced to Inver Models of Scotland, whose owner, Peter Naulls, is every bit the hobbyist that you and I are. “My main business is scale models for architects and housebuilders…. The cars are something I turn to when the regular work is quiet. Because of this, they will only ever be produced in very small quantities (in the last 3 years 100 Coupes, 50 Panel trucks, 50 Roadsters) and the intention is to keep the quality and detail high.”
And so he produces very limited models of the pre-war Austin Seven. Models currently available are the 1930 American Austin Coupe in blue or cream; 1931 American Austin Panel Truck in cream or cream over red. Coming soon: a 1930 American Austin Roadster. “Future plans, maybe a late model Bantam of some kind,” Peter tells us.
“My own interest in Austins stems from having a British Austin Seven, 1934. It is in regular use and often takes the models to our local post office where they begin their journey!” Price for the replicas is £82 – that’s $126, but varies a little with the exchange rate, price includes shipping to the U.S. Each car is numbered and comes with a certificate.
Better still, if you’ve got a car you’ve always wanted made, now could well be your chance. “In terms of pattern-making, I would be happy to work with anyone who has a project in mind.”
