We’re quickly coming to learn quite a bit about Rueben Greene, the North Bennington, Vermont, photographer who was behind the lens for a couple of vintage pictures we’ve already examined. First, he seemed to take just as much interest in everyday happenings as in those of a noteworthy nature. Who else takes a picture of a parking lot with a bunch of daily drivers in it, or of a typical fill-up at a gas station? Second, he didn’t necessarily view cars as something special. Indeed, the cars seem almost ancillary in his photos. Finally, like many of us, he whipped out the camera when he traveled away from home, a trait that led to today’s photograph of a 1957 Mercury (Monterey? Montclair? Hard to tell.) in front of Sue-Ann Frankforts and Boston Pizza in an unknown location, most likely a beach town somewhere north of Boston. According to Robert Woolmington, who provided the photo, “Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, and the southern Maine coast have always been popular with people from Bennington.” Anybody recognize the scene?
