We’ve featured a few FJs before here on the Hemmings Find of the Day, but none quite like this 1965 Toyota FJ45 for sale on Hemmings.com, which has been treated to a number of upgrades, including a Cummins engine swap and five-speed manual transmission. From the seller’s description:
I am offering for sale my Cummins Powered 1965 FJ45 SWB removable top pickup. This vehicle was used in the first Carbon Neutral Expedition and was featured at the 2010 Overland Expo in Arizona.
Here is the build list for this truck:
–Brand New Cummins B3.3 install w/ inter-cooler
-Completely stripped the bottom of the truck cab, both top and bottom and then repainted
-Frame was stripped all suspension modifications were completed then the frame was powder-coated
-rebuilt fine spline axles with 3.7 diffs and disk brakes up front
-shackle reversal
-Saginaw power steering install
-power brakes
-Advanced Adapters rebuilt NV4500 5 speed manual transmission with Rebuilt Toyota split case transfer case with Marks Gearing
-5 new Cooper ST 32 inch tires on new 16 inch rims
-powder coated the frame
-second fuel tank
-installed Vintage A/C and heating system–I installed a complete under-dash unit for future A/C needs, however while driving the truck myself I have never found the need to complete the A/C system. The same under-dash unit also distributes the heat for the truck. If someone wanted to complete the A/C system one of the dual batteries would need to be removed to make room for the A/C compressor and a/c lines would need to be run. All the electrical controls are already in place.
-New rear bumper with tire/fuel carrier
-vintage ARB front bumper installed
-all new body mounts
-new suspension components including OME 2.5” lift springs
-Custom rear canvas topper with two rear zip in doors—one for allowing the bed to be slept in.
-powder coated dash with new Auto meter gauges
-all new wiring including upgraded headlightsAnd even though I won’t be able to enjoy it, but do to my perfectionist side I have recently installed the following:
-rear Aluminum tank with heater for running SVO
-new ARB locker/diff for rear
-new ARB compressor for rear locker
-new custom seat mount with new bucket seats and tuffy boxThe only item that is not a 10 on the truck is the paint as it was painted by the previous owner and is being driven regularly—however the truck still looks amazing. Except for the body of the truck not being repainted this was a frame off restoration with all hardware being replaced and upgraded where possible. The truck has 4000 miles on it since its completion so you are basically buying a “new” truck that can travel at 75MPH comfortably and get 25+ MPG running on several types of fuel.
