I thought about saving this ex-MOD 1984 Land Rover Series III 109 for this year’s March Military Campaign, but I’m afraid the ad for it may expire before then, so consider this a MMC preview. From the seller’s description:
This is an excellent example of a RHD ex-MOD Series III. This was one of the last of the Series III line before the British military moved to the Defender model. It was demobilized from the British military in the late 90s and restored by a buddy of mine in Manchester. I imported it in 2007. It starts the first time every time and can go ANYWHERE. There are very few of these in the U.S. It’s definitely a collector’s item and an attention grabber.
Features: 2.25L, 4-cyl. petrol engine painted in British military green. This is the later Series engine with the 5-bearing crankshaft–a big improvement over earlier Series engines. 4-speed transmission. Military chassis. These are undercoated from new and they are sturdier than their civilian counterparts. Leaf springs and shocks are also heavier duty. Completely new exhaust fitted within last 2000 miles. Twin 10-gallon fuel tanks that can be switched on the fly. Bumperettes front and back. NATO hitch (for Sankey trailer). Military, heavy duty light covers. Convoy light switch with six settings; the front and rear lights can be turned on or off independently of each other. Also includes rear fog lights (for the benefit of those following in the convoy). Dual batteries. Nearly new canvas top. BRAND new, beautiful 12-ply tires ($1000 for the set this past fall). 24V electrical system. I have converted the ignition system to 12V as 24V replacement parts are outrageously priced. Carbeurator upgraded from the original Zenith carb (always problematic) to an excellent Weber carb. Spare alternator (big $$$) included, along with the 24V ignition system if you want it. I am currently replacing the drivers side window track and the speedometer cable. The entire brake system was rebuilt within the last three months and the fuel pump has just been replaced.
Needs: It could use a touch-up on the paint. I’m no longer able to import from the UK via the mail the actual military paint used in the restoration, so I’ve been waiting to repaint until I found a way to get the “real stuff” here.
