All the editors here at Hemmings are huge fans of original cars, and Corvettes are no exception. Which is why we’re planning a very special feature on original, unrestored Corvettes for an upcoming issue of Hemmings Classic Car magazine.
While attending the Bloomington Gold Survivor show in St. Charles, Illinois, in June, I took time out to photograph this well-preserved unrestored 1956 Corvette. This incredible solid-axle beauty is owned by Bob Handschiegel, who purchased it in 2006 from the car’s original owner’s family. After cleaning the underside, Bob discovered that the rear axle still sports the factory-applied yellow paint on the axle tubes, and all the wiring remains wrapped in the factory-installed connectors. Even the dual-carb engine has never been rebuilt.
We’re still searching for an original 1963-’67 Sting Ray to complete the lineup for this special Corvette issue; so if you own such a car and would like to have it profiled in Hemmings Classic Car, kindly contact us. Write to: rlentinello@hemmings.com
