Not all the nice looking cars were parked in the Hemmings lot.

Some interesting items from Thursday evening’s cruise in.

We are still getting cars from long distances away. Some of the locales at this cruise in were from Endicott, NY, Island Pond, VT and Wilmot, NH; all a good 3 to 4 hours drive from Hemmings world headquarters.

Weather has been our friend, both cruise ins so far this year have been sunny and dry (at least during the duration of the event).

Islip Speedway has been closed since 1984 but its vintage window stickers keep popping up at our events:

These were found on a early Sixties Galaxie that was in need of some restoration work. We have seen these stickers on various New York and New Jersey cars before including the Glendale Gasser we posted a blog about back in ‘08.

New York National Speedway was the same facility as the Islip Dragway.  A small 1/5-mile dirt track and figure-8 track were built as well as an 1/8 mile dragstrip at 30 feet above sea level. Built on the grounds of the old Suffolk County Airport, you might remember seeing the track featured on television in the sixties on Wide World of Sports for the tracks figure-8 racing.

Another dealership emblem was spotted at the cruise in that we hadn’t seen before, on a ‘56 Pontiac Star Chief:

We found very little information on the internet about Metropolitan Pontiac, but we were able to determine they were in business between the Thirties and the Eighties as both references we found involved legal actions. One was about a dispute between Denver area dealerships and union workers from 1939 and the other was a worker’s comp case referenced in 1984. If anyone has additional information, please let us know.

Two cruise ins in the books and only six left for this year, our next cruise night is scheduled for June 10th. Plan on making a night of it with us, or an overnight, there is plenty to do here in the Bennington area while you are in town.
