We all play the what-if game with automotive history, though perhaps not to the extent Jeff Godshall did in SIA #73, February 1983, when he considered the possibility of a lesser-priced Pierce-Arrow for 1938. Nor was it idle speculation on Jeff’s part: Pierce executives mentioned the possibility, and Jeff envisioned a perfectly probable utilization of existing resources. As with any product conceived to meet a price point, however, Jeff’s theoretical Pierce-Arrow suffers from far too many compromises, which leads us to believe that Pierce executives probably went down a similar road and decided to let the marque die without the bother of sullying its image with a compromised product.
