If a Corniche is just too common, you might be interested in this open-air 1987 Rolls-Royce Camargue. How’s this for exclusivity? There’s exactly one of these in all the wide world. I actually set eyes on this car at the Gooding auction at Pebble Beach earlier this year, where it was a no-sale, and I can testify to the quality of the work that Niko-Michael Coachworks did in turning Pininfarina’s somewhat ungainly coupe into a retractable hardtop. “With less than 1,000 miles on the odometer, the convertible remained in spectacular condition. We have to think that this one will find just the right collector eventually,” I wrote in the auction description. Everyone will have their own opinion, but I’m filing this one in the “nearly every car looks better as a convertible” department. What I don’t know is if the trunk has enough room for four golf bags once it’s been filled up with folding roof panels. From the seller’s description:

RARE RETRACTABLE HARD TOP….ONE-OFF….ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!  Rolls-Royce has always been synonymous with the world’s elite, and, in that context, a number of coachbuilders were called upon to build some of the world’s most distinctive cars. By the 1970s, specially crafted Rolls-Royce motorcars started to end, but there remained a few craftsmen dedicated to keeping the old world history alive. In 1986, Rolls-Royce produced 12 unique Camargues to commemorate 80,000 Rolls-Royce automobiles sold in America. They were all finished in white livery with scarlet Connolly Hides. In addition, these special motorcars were equipped with white Everflex Tops, exquisite silver inlay, burl walnut trim and special plaques testifying to the very rare production number and the commemorative purpose. This car did not stop there, however. Sold new in 1987 through the World’s Largest Factory Authorized Dealer, Carriage House Motor Cars Ltd. in New York City, the car was further custom crafted by Niko-Michael Coachworks with a special retractable hardtop. Niko is regarded as one of the finest and most talented “old world” craftsmen whose hand craftsmanship is legendary and unsurpassed. This is a one-off custom car. RARE-one off. MINT!
