With the lack of rain this year and several nights in the 40s, the maples here in Vermont have already started turning. This can only mean leaf-peeping season is right around the corner. For those of you on scooters who want to get a jump on the SUVs and out-of-staters with kayaks and mountain bikes, the 13th annual Killington Classic begins today. This four-day event includes guided and unguided scenic motorcycling tours through the Green Mountains, a parade through downtown Rutland, Vermont, and a vintage motorcycle show. Other happenings include a showing of the classic movie Easy Rider, poker runs, a block party, and free admission to the Vermont State Fair in Rutland. Registration begins at 5 p.m. at the Grist Mill on Killington Road just below the ski area. Poker run and other event sign-ups are also located here.
Motorcycle vendors will be on hand at the Wobbly Barn on Killington Access Road from Friday through Sunday. The block party is Friday with a pig roast scheduled on Saturday and a gondola ride and brunch atop Killington Peak on Sunday (limited to the first 120 people). Bill Dutcher, the organizer of the Americade Rally in Lake George, New York, will be a guest speaker on Saturday as well. Be sure to stop by Hemmings world headquarters on your way through Bennington.
