Hot on the heels of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car’s cover piece on the De Lorean a couple of months back, we’ve found a couple of recent small-scale models that fit the bill as well.

We’re not talking the Zylmex item with opening doors, or even the Johnny Lightning one – both are far too old. No, these are recent.

First is Hot Wheels’ tool, a stock De Lorean. The first issue, in silver of course, was snapped up instantly, and the second issue, in a sort of flat gold, is probably clogging a peg near you. (The gold color is correct, of course; two were made.) It’s got everything you could want for a buck: good proportions, nice detailing, and even the rear louvers open up. The multispoke wheels are the closest thing that Hot Wheels has to the De Lorean’s turbine-esque blades. It looks good, and it’s cheap.

But what made us stand up and take notice was the one pictured above, by Tomica. It’s a souvenir, available only at Universal Studios Japan, where the Back to the Future ride still runs. (It’s closed in Los Angeles.) It’s decked out in full BTTF livery. We’re only going by the same photos that you see, but we’re going to need to get our mitts on one post-haste. Short of a trip to Japan to go to Universal Studios, your best way to get one is by going to ToyEast and paying the nearly $30 before shipping. Hey, it’s cheaper than a trip to Tokyo. But for that kind of cash we’d like to see some sort of premium wheel – or even those cool chrome-lipped Tomica wide wheels that look so cool on everything they’re put on.

(Editor’s note: Due to a misunderstanding, the above photo ran with last week’s Tomica returns story instead of this one. We apologize for the mix-up.)
